Senyokô Paris Madama Butterfly II (Euan McCall): I had read the Silver Fox’s review but wasn’t prepared for the rich and rounded beauty of this fragrance. It’s as if lush carpet of sakura blossoms and raspberries was unfurled under my bare feet and petals soaked in cognac laced with quince fruit rained from the heavens.

Senyokô Duo Des Fleurs (Euan McCall) The newly founded Senyokô has been one of the year’s most exciting discoveries, delighting me with its supreme quality and coherent aesthetic choices. Duo Des Fleurs proves that there is always room for genuine creativity, even when dealing with a combination as “old as time”: rose and jasmine. The two flowers, surrounded by exceptional ingredients like davana, datura, Mysore sandalwood and an earthy mitti attar accord, transform into an intoxicating, almost narcotic potion of lyrical dimensions.

Senyoko La Tsarine– The best release from a brand I discovered just this year. Joseph and Emilia Berthion have collaborated with perfumer Euan McCall on a remarkable collection with breadth. La Tsarine is inspired by the carnal adventures of Catherine the Great. Rare is the perfume that lives up to that. La Tsarine is unafraid to delve deeply into the concept. A perfume not for the timid.

I thank the perfume gods and The Silver Fox for bringing to my attention the talented Euan McCall of Edinburgh-based Jorum Laboratories. He is a perfumer you will be reading much more about and have read about on these pages. He’s the nose behind the brand Senyoko Paris and has his own brand Jorum Studio. Two of my top ten fragrances this year were authored by him so stay tuned.-Michelyn
COLOGNOISSEUR | New Perfume Review Senyoko La Tsarine- NSFW Perfume
Senyoko was founded in 2018 by husband-and-wife Joseph and Emilia Berthion. They released two perfumes in 2018; Madama Butterfly II and Migration de L’Arbre. The latter was a finalist for the Art & Olfaction Awards last year. When I received my sample set, I remembered encountering both during my judging of last year’s candidates. I was impressed when trying them blind. Knowing what they were only confirmed that opinion. This year there have been two new releases. Duo des Fleurs is a cross-pollination of Rose de Mai and jasmine sambac over a rich sandalwood attar. One thing which is becoming apparent over these early releases is perfumer Euan McCall is forming a deep aesthetic. These are perfumes which shift tremendously over the time on your skin. None more so than La Tsarine.

Jorum Studio Nectary (Euan McCall): Euan McCall of Edinburgh-based Jorum Laboratories is my rising star of 2019 and has garnered two of my best perfumes of 2019. Using only the finest ingredients he captures the terroir of his homeland and his Nectary smells of blackberries plucked by the shore in Autumn. This stanza from Sylvia Plath’s poem comes to mind.
“ Nobody in the lane, and nothing, nothing but blackberries,
Blackberries on either side, though on the right mainly,
A blackberry alley, going down in hooks, and a sea
Somewhere at the end of it, heaving. Blackberries”.
Imagine a garden untended, where herbs and roses grow untamed and for me that is Nectary. Notes: Bramble, Cranberry, Peach, Rose Absolute, Oud, Ambergris, Roseroot, Olibanum, Selfheal, Castoreum, Civet, Labdanum Absolute, Musk

AUSTRALIAN PERFUME JUNKIES | Carduus by Jorum Studio: Scent of Scotland
This is as a matter of fact, the scent of Scotland as I remember it. It is the low autumnal sun still kissing the hills and gifting the golden hues of the leaves the start of their glory. It is the smell of the cold wind whipping at my sun touched face climbing up the wet path to Arthur’s Seat. It is the imaginary scent of Scotland’s flower, the Thistle. It is the wet, fallen leaves giving way under my feet as we look for fairies on one of our walks in Highlands. It is the existential mood as we strolled around Loch Lubnaig as foggy mists hung low on the hills. It is watching a dog playing with his owner in a golden field on a windy day.

Migration de l'arbre I really smell the intent of Eglantine and Joseph, brought to life in fragrance form by the perfumer Euan McCall. He succeeded at depicting the nature of the forest itself, the woodcutter cutting the tree, the serene atmosphere, the cool air, the flowers and fruits of the forest, the rebirth of the greenery and the dry leaves on the soil.
SCENTED SHELF | Neandertal Light and Dark
The perfumes are created by young Scottish perfumer Euan McCall. His approach was based on the exploration of perfume materials that can be connected to a Neanderthal way of living and their environment: leather, foliage and berries, smoke and woods (Hinoki, oud), salt (seaweed, ambergris, salty facet of vetiver), resins, balsams and tars.

Apocalypse, an olfactory index of every element in the Book of Revelation that could conceivably have a smell, was loaned to me by the London gallery of the conceptual artists Thomson & Craighead, who produced fifty bottles last year with the help of the Edinburgh perfumer Euan McCall.

So what we wanted to do is take all the olfactory materials, all the things that make a kind of smell in the Book of Revelation, as it's published in a version of the Bible — the King James version, which was published in 1611 — and then to pass that over to Euan McCall, who's a perfumer based in Edinburgh, and for him to then make a perfume from that list.

‘neandertal’ is as much a fragrance as it is a piece of art. the bottle was created through close collaboration with a master of knapping –using blunt hand-tools to fracture brittle stones. once the basic shape was created, yamada traveled to portuguese porcelain manufacturer visa alegre. throughout an artist residency, the form was reworked and improved for casting processes. finally, the design was slip-cast resulting in small, rock-like formations of porcelain. as the bottles were being completed, yamada was working with scottish perfumer euan mccall

A symbosis of product, material and history
Creating two unisex perfumes in collaboration with perfumer Euan McCall, the project was inspired by the history of Neandertal who disappeared from earth around 30,000 years ago. The fragrances are inspired by the history and past of Neandertal’s, harboring ingredients such as leather; berry and Hinoki which are combined with sophisticated olfactory palettes wearable by humans of today.

Euan McCall has been surrounded by the art of perfumery his entire life. Partaking in classical perfumery courses in his youth further instilled an undying passion for aroma. Since those formative years he has spent the last decade training, working within the perfumery industry and taking an autodidact approach to organic chemistry. Euan is preoccupied by our senses, how they work, the journeys they can take us on, their emotive power and their ability to recall memories, people and places. He has worked with and consulted for independent and multinational fragrance and beverage companies in fragrance creation and evaluation as well as unique one-off collaborations. Euan McCall works under his own 'Jorum Laboratories' brand based in the hauntingly beautiful heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. Euan takes inspiration from nature, chemistry, architecture and the arts.
